Beneficial Aspects of Martial Arts Training

Were you to believe in the depiction on the big screen, martial arts may seem full of Japanese swords and flying ninjas.  These characters are fun to watch in movies; but do not adequately depict what you become when you practice any type of martial art.  While there are indeed forms of martial arts that make use of Japanese swords or other ancient weapons, this type of training is far down the line for the beginner.

In the very beginning, before every setting foot into a studio or onto a mat, you may feel intimidated by the thought of training in a martial art.  This would be doubly – or tenfold – true if you buy into the whole Japanese sword wielding warrior notion.  Who can live up to those standards?  Well, you don’t have to.  Relax and approach martial arts with a better understanding of what it can do for you sans weapons.

Martial arts training is beneficial for every person, regardless of their reasons for seeking training.  Today, countless kids are being enrolled in classes by worried parents as the bullying craze is far from over.  In fact, training in an art is good for all kids, the bullied and the bully alike.  The reasons are numerous.  First, training provides a valuable skill to a child who may be the object of teasing or taunting; as they will learn how to defend themselves physically should they ever have to.

The problem with this thought is that bullying is not always physical.  In fact, it usually stays on an emotional level.  Aha!  Martial arts is still beneficial in such scenarios because it provides an outlet for the stressed-out child.  It puts him or her in a group of peers who are all learning the same skills under the tutelage of a humble master.  A good martial arts master today will have a firm understanding of how important it is to follow the ancient arts teachings of peace before violence.  No, your child won’t be training with Japanese swords, so you can breathe easy.

In terms of how martial arts training can be good for a child who bullies, it must be said that the benefit relies on the attitude of the master.  Most of us have watched Karate Kid.  We know that not all teachers are on the up and up with their moral character.  Any parent would hope that an aggressive child is placed under such a sensei as good old Mr. Miagi, who will teach humility and peace above all fighting skills.

Aside from the increased confidence and self-esteem that come from martial arts skills is the literal skill itself.  This may be the first thing people expect, to learn how to fight.  They therefore neglect to notice the other benefits mentioned here.  Physical skill is indeed important!  The victim can feel empowered to fight back against an aggressor; the average person can gain control over their own personal safety in a world where violent crimes occur at alarming rate.

When you consider the benefits of martial arts for yourself or your child; all reservations can fly right out the window.
